  16. The Read Only Memory (ROM) chips
  17. hold information that has been built
  18. into them.  The RAM chips can
  19. remember what you tell them.  But
  20. the only thing these two kinds of
  21. chips can remember are "on" and
  22. "off".
  23.    The memory chips are divided into
  24. thousands of little compartments
  25. called bits.  Each bit is either
  26. "on" or "off."  The bits are grouped
  27. together in eights.  
  28.    Each group of eight bits is
  29. called a byte.
